Rhodes’ picturesque beaches offer a tranquil haven for lone travelers, the historic old town is a veritable goldmine of stories about crusaders and knights, and the Hora neighborhood is home to brightly colored mosques.

Split, a city in Croatia, came in second place with ratings from lone tourists averaging 73 stars. Tourists were especially happy about the city’s attractions: an astounding 81 percent of reviews gave them five stars, and 66 percent of restaurant ratings agreed. There are plenty of historical sights in Split that are enjoyable to explore on your own, especially the magnificent Diocletian’s palace, one of the most remarkable Roman structures still standing. You’ll find pubs and eateries nestled away in every corner among its grand colonnades and massive temple fronts.

Just over two-thirds of lone travelers gave the quaint Portuguese city of Faro five stars, tying it for third place. Attraction reviews in the city performed well, scoring 74 percent of five-star ratings; restaurant reviews came in significantly lower at 59 percent. If you have some free time when visiting Faro on your own, be sure to check out the bustling old town surrounded by medieval walls. Visit the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, a baroque church whose interior is gilded, for a taste of richness. The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, an 18,000-hectare paradise of lagoons and salt marshes brimming with bird life, is a haven for nature lovers.

Istanbul, the thriving Turkish metropolis that received five stars from two-thirds of lone travelers, comes in third place after Faro. The city’s attractions fared well, with 64 percent of evaluations obtaining five stars, while its food scene was exceptional, with 71 percent receiving top ratings. With so many kebab stalls providing delicious street food and the chance to have the famed fish sandwich (balık ekmek) by the Bosphorus coasts, Istanbul is the ideal place to practice the art of dining alone. Sitting at a curbside table in hip areas like Çukurcuma is another way to eat in public without feeling awkward—it’s a great place to people-watch.

Fourth place goes to Florence, which is rated five stars in 66 percent of reviews. 61 percent of five-star evaluations were given to the city in central Italy’s restaurants, while 71 percent of reviews were given to its attractions. With its opulent Renaissance palaces and elegant squares, Florence’s historic center is a lovely solo exploration location. Take your time admiring the city’s fountains and statues. Those who enjoy art can spend some time introspecting in the magnificent Uffizi Gallery, which is home to well-known pieces by luminaries like Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Botticelli.
