Slovenians are urged by the government to confirm the validity of their passports before departing this summer.

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has released a travel advise for all potential foreign visitors as May Day and the summer vacation draw closer. Officials are reminding people of the need of having suitable and legal travel documents and are recommending that people check the status of their documents well in advance of their intended travel dates.

According to data from the same source, a considerable number of Slovenian passports and IDs will expire by the end of 2024, with a total of around 38,000 passports and over 96,000 IDs that need to be renewed. June and July are when most of these expirations are scheduled to occur.

More specifically, it is anticipated that 20,899 IDs and 6,064 passports will expire in June, and that 20,654 IDs and 6,574 passports will expire in July.

It is advised by the government that travelers take proactive measures to ensure that their passports, visas, and any other required documents remain valid, given the possibility of travel interruptions caused by expired or soon to expire documents.

The government further emphasizes that residents who require their passports or identity cards issued immediately may choose to pay extra for priority processing, which ensures delivery within one business day. Documents are valid for three years for children under three and for five years for individuals between the ages of three and eighteen.

The shorter validity periods for children’s documents should be known by parents.

Additionally, parents or legal representatives must apply on behalf of their children for passports or IDs at any administrative unit. Old records and child pictures, or approved e-photos, are needed for the process. In order to be verified and to sign, children older than eight must be present. Additionally, fingerprinting is a requirement for passports and IDs issued after the age of 12.

The following nations allow admission and temporary residency (up to 90 days) for holders of a valid Slovenian identity card:
