Portugal Travel Warning for British Citizens

The United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Office has issued a travel advise for British people planning to visit Lisbon in the coming days due to World Youth Day celebrations. Public transportation and other amenities are expected to be more congested during this time. The caution advises passengers to plan ahead of time and be prepared for potential road closures and limited car access to the city during large events. From July 22 to August 7, enhanced border security checks will be in effect.

World Youth Day, which will take place from August 1 to August 6, will include a visit from Pope Francis, which will contribute to the expected influx of people in Lisbon.

Aside from the event crowds, Portugal is now enjoying a heatwave, with portions of Spain and Portugal reporting maximum temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius for more than a week, with some locations reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius. The scorching weather and dust clouds that have blanketed the country have resulted in abnormally high temperatures, according to local media.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has issued a yellow alert for numerous regions this month, including Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, Braga, Leiria, and Coimbra, due to the forecast of sustained high temperatures. Temperatures are forecast to remain over 30 degrees Celsius for the next few days, extending the current condition. During this time, the UV radiation index will be high, necessitating the usage of protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, and sunblock.

Despite Portugal’s popularity as a holiday destination for British holidaymakers, with the Algarve being named as a favored spot, potential visitors are cautioned to heed these warnings before arranging their trips. With its stunning beaches and unique experiences, the country attracts millions of tourists, particularly during the summer season.
