Portugal: 34.8% of rooms are occupied by tourists in the Algarve, up 1.4% from 2022.

The Algarve region had a hotel and tourist facility room occupancy rate of 34.8% in the previous month, which is 1.4 percentage points higher than the similar figure from 2022. Nonetheless, the region saw a 1.2 percentage point decline in comparison to the pre-pandemic period in December 2019.

The Dutch market contributed 0.6 percentage points to the year-over-year rise, while the German and Irish markets both made 0.2 percentage points.

In terms of geography, the Vilamoura/Quarteira/Quinta do Lago region—which includes popular tourist spots in the Loulé municipality—saw notable expansion, surpassing December 2022 by a margin of almost 4.8 percentage points. Albufeira also had a significant rise, outpacing the numbers from the prior year by over 1.9 percentage points.

Portugal saw a record-breaking year in tourism the year before, bringing in €25 billion, a significant 37% rise over the peak year of 2019. An impressive 18.5% more money was made in the tourism sector in 2023 than in 2022, demonstrating the nation’s economic recovery and strong industrial growth.

Portugal’s appeal as a travel destination was highlighted by the 30 million visitors it welcomed in 2023—a notable 10% increase over the year prior to the epidemic. In 2023, the nation recorded an astounding 77 million overnight stays.

Around 3.5 million people stayed in Portugal’s lodging facilities in August of that same year. Together, these visitors accounted for an astounding 10.1 million overnight stays, according to the Government Office for National Statistics of Portugal (INE). This generated the highest monthly revenue ever recorded for the nation, totaling €878.3 million, a 10.4% rise over the same month in 2022.
