Instead of raising airline ticket taxes, France wants to lower train ticket prices.

The French government has disclosed intentions to hike airline ticket taxes in order to fund critical investments in train infrastructure. As part of an effort to lessen dependency on airplanes, this strategic approach intends to stimulate a shift toward train travel for both local and international journeys.

Clément Beaune, France’s Minister of Transport, indicated that additional airplane ticket charges will be implemented in the following year as part of the new budget. Minister Beaune noted the growing popularity of train travel and the importance of making it more accessible. He indicated his willingness to promote this trend by partnering with regional authorities to cut prices, anticipating a record-breaking summer for railway ticket sales.

Minister Beaune also hinted at the possibility of instituting an airplane fuel levy to promote ecological practices. While no official timetable for the cut in rail prices has been set, Minister Beaune has stated that it will be implemented by the following summer.

The government’s priority includes making more cheap options available, particularly for young passengers. Minister Beaune announced intentions to establish a low-cost, unlimited travel permit for young people for the summer.

Minister Beaune previously stated that French citizens already pay lower train prices than their counterparts in neighboring European Union countries. However, by lowering rates even further, the goal is to encourage more ecologically friendly transportation options.

France has implemented lower summer train prices to help both locals and tourists save money. Over 200,000 train tickets at a fixed price of €19 have been sold, and select express train services in Hauts-de-France are available for only €1 until August 27. Due to limited availability at the €1 price point, potential passengers are urged to purchase their tickets in advance.
