Increase in Schengen Visa Fees: Find Out How Much More You Might Have to Pay for Your Trip to the EU in 2024.

Notifications of cancellations will be sent to passengers beginning at 4 p.m. today.

A union representing Lufthansa’s ground crew has called for a one-day strike on Wednesday over a pay dispute. This is just the most recent in a string of strikes affecting the German transportation industry. The Ver.di union has declared that ground workers at the airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, and Düsseldorf will be the focus of a 27-hour walkout that is scheduled to begin at 4 a.m. on February 7.

The union is arguing for a minimum additional monthly payment of €500 or a 12.5% pay raise in negotiations involving almost 25,000 personnel, including check-in, aircraft handling, maintenance, and freight staff. In response, Lufthansa has been working on a customized schedule and has been critical of the strike’s scope ever since the conflict began.

Travelers and commuters have been inconvenienced by a series of travel strikes in Germany, which have been accompanied by concurrent contract discussions impacting the train, air, and local transport sectors. Recent walkouts and strikes by security personnel at major airports, coordinated by Ver.di, resulted in the cancelation of local buses, trams, and subway trains. In German contract talks, one-day or short-term “warning strikes” are a common tactic.

The demand for a shortened working week by the train drivers’ union is at the center of the current controversy in the German railway system. The GDL union has agreed not to hold any more strikes until March 3rd in negotiations with Deutsche Bahn, the state-owned primary train operator, following a five-day walkout last month.

Due to the strike, Lufthansa expects there to be major disruptions to its flight schedule on February 7-8. Around 4 p.m. today, travelers who have reservations for these dates will receive information via email or the Lufthansa app on cancellations and rebooking options. It is recommended to regularly check for updates. In the event that flights are abruptly canceled and there isn’t a suitable replacement, customers can usually convert their airline tickets into Deutsche Bahn train tickets at no additional cost.
