In an effort to preserve the iconic landmark, Paris has raised ticket prices for the Eiffel Tower by 20%.

Increased Ticket Prices for the Eiffel Tower and Upkeep Needed.

The Paris council decided to increase the cost to assist the preservation of the landmark, thus visitors to the Eiffel Tower in Paris will now have to pay €35 instead of the previous €29.10.

All adult visitors are affected by this legislation, which went into effect on June 17, 2024, and will result in a 20% rise in pricing. Children from four to eleven years old and young adults up to 24 years old are also impacted by this change.

Even though it ranks as the ninth most popular monument globally, the Eiffel Tower is having difficulty recovering the amount of visitors it had before the pandemic. Attendance has also been impacted by disagreements between Paris City Hall and SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel), the public company in charge of maintaining the landmark.

Effects of Postponing Painting the Eiffel Tower

Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who designed the tower, passed away 100 years ago in December 2023. According to Eiffel, the tower’s metal framework needed to be preserved by painting it every seven years. But the 2020 repainting—which was supposed to happen eleven years after the last one—was postponed.

The tower is currently being repainted, and maintenance expenses are skyrocketing—particularly in light of the 2024 Olympics, which will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11. SETE asserts that more funding is required because of various issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects. They report a €113 million income loss as a result of higher maintenance expenses and a decline in tourists during the pandemic.

Statistics on Eiffel Tower Visitors

The number of visitors to the Eiffel Tower increased from 5.85 million in 2022 to 6.32 million in 2023, according to Statista. This suggests a return to the 6.14 million visits before to the outbreak. It hasn’t yet surpassed the 2014 record of 7.1 million visits, though.

One of the factors influencing the erratic amount of visitors is the maintenance work that occasionally requires the tower to be closed, as it did in February 2024.
