Finns have one more month to test their digital travel documents.

The last phase of testing for Finland’s digital travel document, the Digital Travel Credentials (DTC), will end on March 31, 2024. This month, Finnair is encouraging its citizens traveling abroad to test the DTC, which will speed up and simplify the screening process. There are 22 distinct Finnair flights that offer testing to and from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

On certain Finnair destinations, such as Alanya (Türkiye), Changi (Singapore), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (US), Doha International Airport (Qatar), Dubai International Airport (UAE), and others mentioned below, Finnish travelers traveling outside the Schengen Area in March will be able to test the DTC.

It is imperative that Finns using Helsinki Airport to get to these locations and back use the DTC. This guarantees that authorities gather enough information about its efficacy. Finland intends to roll out the document more broadly after it has been shown to be effective in expediting travel procedures.

Since August 2023, when DTC testing began at Helsinki Airport, hundreds of Finnish nationals have successfully cleared border controls and provided good feedback. Roughly 65% of respondents said the document inspection process was quick and easy, and an astounding 82% said they would be willing to use the DTC on subsequent foreign flights.

Border check times have been drastically lowered to less than ten seconds on average thanks to the DTC. Acting as the digital equivalent of a physical passport, the DTC is just as trustworthy. The testing can be scheduled at the police stations in Tikkurila or Helsinki Airport, and registration only takes a few minutes for interested Finnish individuals. To take part in the testing phase, participants must be adults and in possession of a valid Finnish passport.
