The EU Ambassador said that member states may suspend Georgia’s visa-free travel for a period of six months.

Following Georgia’s enactment of the contentious “foreign agents” law, EU member states may choose to halt the visa-free travel of Georgian citizens for a period of six months, according to EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński.

Ambassador Herczyński stated in an interview that member states are presently discussing potential actions against Georgia. Suspending visa-free travel, he argued, is a more plausible course of action than alternative options.

A majority vote would be sufficient to support the suspension, according to Ambassador Herczyński. Therefore, if the majority of member states approve, the EU may move forward with the suspension.

Ambassador Herczyński acknowledged the possibility of such a decision, but emphasized that it would primarily affect Georgian residents rather than the government. He emphasized that the goal of the EU is not to penalize common people.

Georgia’s travel ban without a visa has already been pushed for by a number of EU nations.

Several EU members, such as the Netherlands, Estonia, and Czechia, have already pushed EU officials to revoke Georgia’s visa-free travel policy. These nations think that taking this action is essential to getting the Georgian government to change their mind.

Furthermore, additional sanctions against Georgia are being contemplated, according to EU officials, though they did not disclose any specifics.

According to EU authorities, Georgia’s passage of the “foreign agents” bill represents a serious setback for the nation’s EU membership process.

Georgian officials, such as Vice Prime Minister Tea Tsulukiani, have discounted the possibility of the suspension of visa-free travel, pointing to a number of procedural obstacles that would make it impossible for the EU to revoke the policy.
