In the course of our coverage for International Women’s Day (IWD), Euronews Travel had discussions with a number of inspiring women who are redefining the travel industry and dedicated to having a good influence.

The topic of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Inspire Inclusion,” which centers on problems including reproductive rights, gender equality, and ending violence against women. The event, which is slated for March 8, 2024, aims to support women’s participation by creating a feeling of significance, empowerment, and belonging.

According to this theme, Euronews Travel had the honor of interviewing powerful female travel industry figures, especially those committed to sustainability in Europe and beyond.

Dr. Susanne Etti, Global Environmental Impact Manager at Intrepid Travel:

One of the main players in the decarbonization of the travel business is Dr. Susanne Etti, Global Environmental Impact Manager at Intrepid Travel, the largest adventure travel company in the world. Intrepid Travel accomplished firsts for the industry under her direction, becoming the first travel operator with confirmed Science-Based Targets for lowering carbon emissions. Dr. Etti emphasizes the transformative power of women-led tourism and focuses on empowering women in the business as well as gender equality.

Sue Stockdale, Polar Explorer and Champion for Climate Crisis:

Sue Stockdale, a British lady who was the first to ski across the Greenland Icecap and to the North Pole, uses her personal experience to promote climate action. As an ambassador for Panache Cruises at the moment, Stockdale stresses the value of scientific studies and conservation initiatives, such as the removal of trash from ships, in order to improve the sustainability of vacation experiences.

Dr. Fiona McIntyre: Social Entrepreneur and Marine Biologist

In Aberdeen, Scotland, marine biologist Dr. Fiona McIntyre established Greyhope Bay, an off-grid environmental facility, with the goal of fostering community connections with the marine environment. McIntyre’s project, which focuses on sustainability and community engagement, has outperformed expectations, bringing in more than twice as many people annually.

Güliz Öztürk, Pegasus Airlines’ CEO:

Güliz Öztürk became the first female CEO in Turkish aviation when she was appointed CEO of Pegasus Airlines. Öztürk and her team have prioritized sustainability by implementing eco-friendly methods, such as buying eco-friendly aircraft, investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuels, and using e-vehicles for ground operations. Pegasus was honored at the Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence presented by CAPA.

CEO of Cottar’s Safaris and conservationist Louise Cottar:

In her luxurious safari experiences, Louise Cottar, co-owner of Cottar’s Safaris in Kenya, places a strong emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable methods. A Global Ecosphere Retreat, Cottar’s 1920s Camp and the exclusive Bush Villa are dedicated to sustainability. Cottar actively promotes conservation and community development through the all-female ranger staff of the Cottar’s Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Invisible Cities’ founder, Zakia Moulaoui-Guery:

The creator of the social entrepreneurship and travel company Invisible Cities, Zakia Moulaoui-Guery, educates former homeless people to be tour guides. The business gives jobs and life skills to people involved, fostering community well-being without sacrificing the future. All earnings are put back into the business, with ambitions to grow into more cities.
