Denmark Reminds Again: The deadline for British nationals to apply for residency permits expires on December 31.

The EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement’s British citizens and their family members have once again been reminded by Danish authorities that the application deadline for residence permits is drawing near, with a deadline of December 31, 2023.

According to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), anyone who satisfies the conditions of the agreement—such as having free movement and legal residence under EU law before December 3, 2021—is qualified to apply for a residence permit in Denmark.

It’s crucial to remember that the official cutoff date is December 31, 2023, and that the extended deadline only applies to British citizens who haven’t applied before. Additionally, according to SIRI, the extension is for people whose residence applications were denied after the original deadline and for people who want to reopen their cases in the event that their initial denial was the result of a late submission.

The previous deadline for British nationals residing in Denmark to submit an application for a residence permit was December 31, 2021. Authorities decided to extend this deadline until the end of 2023 because many people were unable to meet it.

In 2021, there were significantly fewer British immigrants to Denmark than there had been in the previous fifteen years, primarily as a result of new regulations that British nationals had to comply with in the EU after Brexit. Just 854 British people moved to Denmark in 2021, a sharp decrease from the 1,405 who did so in 2020, according to Denmark Statistics.
