Denmark announces raising the application fee for citizenship to €804.

A statement from the Ministry of Immigration and Integration states that the cost to apply for Danish citizenship would go up from 4,000 DKK (€536) to 6,000 DKK (€804).

The increased price, according to the Ministry, is meant to more accurately represent the expenses associated with processing applications. The Minister made the observation that many applicants submit several applications only to have them denied, implying that it is unjust to allow them to resubmit without incurring new fees.

The application cost was 1,200 DKK (€168) before to 2018. It went from 3,800 DKK (€509) to 4,000 DKK in 2021, and it is now going to increase by 50% to 6,000 DKK.

Additionally, Denmark is imposing a new charge for recurrent applications. According to the Ministry, there would be a new application fee for people whose first two applications were denied.

Spokesman for immigration law Heidi Bank stressed the need of regularly reviewing citizenship laws to stop abuse by people who shouldn’t be granted Danish citizenship.

In March 2023, the Danish government declared that this new application cost would be applied. In the past, applicants may reapply for free after paying a 4,000 DKK charge.

The current regulations still apply to foreign residents of Denmark who intend to apply for citizenship, as the new bill needs to be ratified by parliament before the fee adjustments become effective.
