6,000 Indian citizens will be hired by Italian bosses beginning in April.

The Migration and Mobility Agreement between India and Italy states that Italy will take 6,000 non-seasonal Indian workers in 2024, and that the application procedure for these workers would open in April. The 2023-established “Planning of legal entry flows in Italy for Foreign Workers” order sets a quota of 151,000 for the 2023–2025 term.

A total of 30,000 workers will be chosen to work in the EU nation throughout the three-year period, according to the Indo-Italian deal, which addresses labor shortages in a number of industries. With 6,000 non-seasonal and 4,000 seasonal workers from India expected to be hired in Italy by 2024, the trend of hiring Indian labor is expected to continue.

Italy provides temporary labor for Indian nationals all year round, with employment starting at 8,000 in 2023 and reaching a peak of 12,000 in 2025. Regular or permanent job is an alternative available to non-seasonal workers.

Additionally, the agreement permits Indian students seeking degrees in EU member states to remain in Italy for up to a year following graduation in order to work as professionals. A total of 134,000 work quotas have been set for Italy in 2024, and about 151,000 nationals of third countries are permitted to work there. By 2025, this number will have increased, allowing about 165,000 non-EU nationals to work in Italy.

According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, there are presently 45,000 individuals of Indian descent living in Italy, out of 157,000 non-resident Indians. The number of Indians living in Italy has increased tenfold in the last 20 years.

Saket Gokhale, a member of the Trinamool Congress, has highlighted apprehensions about the new deal, citing high unemployment rates in India, while embracing Indian workers. Nonetheless, the Indian ministry of statistics reports that the nation’s jobless rate fell to 3.1% in 2023—the lowest level in three years. The percentage of unemployed people was 4.2% in 2021 and 3.6% in 2022, indicating a downward trend in unemployment rates.
