Two Israelis and their tour guide are killed by an Egyptian police officer

Before being captured by security personnel, a rogue police officer in the port city of Alexandria hurt another Israeli visitor. According to both Israeli and Egyptian authorities, the event happened on Sunday when an Egyptian policeman opened fire on Israeli visitors, killing at least two Israelis and one Egyptian. The attack happened in Alexandria at the location of Pompey’s Pillar, and one other person was hurt. The wounded person was identified by Israel’s Foreign Ministry as an Israeli with moderate injuries, and the ministry declared that it will work with the Egyptian authorities to make it easier for impacted Israelis to return home. The alleged attacker was quickly taken into custody, and the attack location was secured by security personnel. Online responses to graphic footage of the incident’s aftermath that was making the rounds on social media were mixed. Ibrahim Issa, a well-known writer and TV host from Egypt, called the attack a “terrorist crime” and opposed any attempts to rationalize it. Human Rights Watch researcher Amr Magdi made a strong denunciation, saying there is no excuse for deliberately attacking Israeli civilians. The attack highlights the complicated dynamics of Egypt’s historical peace treaty with Israel in the face of enduring anti-Israeli sentiment in the nation and occurred during heightened tensions in the area as a result of Israel’s battle with Palestinian terrorists.”
