Lithuania will construct a physical barrier along its border with Belarus and Russia in marshy areas.

In order to cover marshy areas where such barriers have not yet been installed, Lithuanian authorities have declared their desire to expand the installation of physical barriers along the border with Belarus and Russia. Agn Bilotait, the interior minister of Lithuania, the environment minister, and the deputy director of the state protected services were present when this decision was announced.

This action is being taken to improve the nation’s border security because there has been a noticeable increase in unauthorized border crossings this year. About 700 migrants who were trying to enter Lithuania illegally were discovered, according to Minister Bilotait, in the swampy border regions with Belarus. Authorities have also discovered 13 instances of smuggling in the same area since the year’s beginning.

Minister Bilotait made it clear that the construction of physical barriers along the border would not call for the cutting of any trees, and the results of the environmental impact assessment, which was carried out in conjunction with specialists in environmental protection, showed that there would be no harm to the environment.

In particular, in reaction to hybrid threats from Belarus and the Russian incursion into Ukraine, Lithuania has significantly increased border surveillance. Lithuania is thinking about reinstating coastal border patrols in addition to the marshy border regions to strengthen its maritime frontiers.

Minister Bilotait emphasized the significance of diligent guarding of both the maritime and land borders in light of the current situation. Lithuania is adamant about being well-prepared for surges in unauthorized immigration as well as potential hybrid attacks.
